As she continues her triumphant comeback following a rough patch in her life, Demi Lovato is going strong and is using the negativity she faced as a positive, saying she wants to be a role model for kids and teens.

In an interview on Ellen set to air on Tuesday, Lovato opens up about what she calls her “negative breakdown,” which culminated with a violent episode that led to her leaving the Jonas Brothers tour last October and eventually checking herself into treatment. Demi says on the show (via People.com):

“So many things were going great in my life, and then all of a sudden my personal life just went down at crazy speeds … I had a negative breakdown and it changed my life forever.”

She continues, explaining the seriousness of the situation: “But if I hadn’t gone into treatment … I don’t know if, one, I’d even be sitting here today, [or] two, if I’d be alive today.”

Lovato, who admitted that she had been dealing with an eating disorder for years prior to the breakdown, says she wants to use her experiences and starpower to be a role model for kids who might be battling with similar issues.

“There was nobody out there for me to look at and say maybe this is unhealthy … I want to be that for a 13-year old girl at home deciding whether or not to eat dinner, or an 18-year-old girl deciding whether or not to keep her breakfast down,” Demi said, adding that the media’s preference for very skinny girls and models isn’t something she wants to promote.

“I don’t want that for young girls to idolize,” Lovato said in the interview.
